The New York Knickerbockers were founded on June 6, 1946, as charter members of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which later became the National Basketball Association (NBA). Created by founder Ned Irish, the team's official name was drawn out of a hat and inspired by Washington Irving’s 1809 literary character "Diedrich Knickerbocker," a symbol of Old New York’s Dutch heritage. It was quickly shortened to the "Knicks"
